Sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Endangered Species Coalition and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art/University of New Orleans, the Endangered Species Day ceremony honors the winners of the National Endangered Species Day Art Contest. Program: Rowan Gould, Acting Director, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Jack Hanna, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Leda Huta, Executive Director, Endangered Species Coalition Endangered Species Day Art Contest Winners: Grand Prize: Carter Schroeder, Anchorage, AK, Polar Bear & Beluga Whale First Place: Sarah Favreau, Carlsbad, CA, Northern Spotted Owl & Island Fox First place winners in each grade category: Grades 10-12: Samantha Arnold, San Diego, CA, Northern Spotted Owl Grades 7-9: Laura Allen, El Cajon, CA, San Joaquin Kit Fox Grades 3-6: Josie Maxwell, Tucson, AZ, Borderland Jaguar Grades K-2: Carter Schroeder Anchorage, AK, Polar Bear & Beluga Whale Endangered Species Day Art Contest Award Designer: Meredith Graf, New Orleans, LA Endangered Species Day Started in 2006 by the United States Congress, Endangered Species Day is a recognition of the importance of endangered species and an occasion to learn how we can help protect them. The national Endangered Species Day Art contest provides students with an opportunity to learn about endangered species and express their knowledge and support through artwork. Party with the Penguins You are invited to attend the Association of Zoos and Aquariums reception immediately afterward at 6pm. Meet Jack Hanna, Director Emeritus, Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, interact with his animal ambassadors, and learn about the wildlife conservation efforts of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums. |
